Chocolate Chip Layer Cake

It was my original intent to start something on my blog that I would call Family Recipe Fridays, but I just couldn’t wait to share this one with you. This chocolate chip layer cake is one that has been present at family gatherings for as long as I can remember, and it will be at those gatherings for years to come. It’s far from health food, but it’s a cake I hold near and dear to my heart, because it is INCREDIBLE. It’s fluffy, moist, and rich in all the right ways, and the best part is that it comes from a mix. To get started, gather up your ingredients:

There’s also some vanilla pudding mix in here that’s not pictured, but don’t forget to leave it out! Sadly, the lighting in my kitchen is just too awful to give you some good step by step photos of this recipe, but you can find them in detail below. Now, do yourself a favor and make this cake. It’s a go-to recipe that I hope you and your family will enjoy, just as mine has.

Chocolate Chip Layer Cake

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 1 hour, 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 package yellow cake mix
  • 1 package instant vanilla pudding
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup (8 oz) sour cream
  • 1 package (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6 tbsp sugar, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F
  2. Beat cake mix, instant pudding, oil, eggs, and sour cream together for 10 minutes (yep, that's 10 whole minutes!) and set aside.
  3. In a medium sized bowl, mix cocoa and 3 tbsp sugar.
  4. Add chocolate chips to cocoa/sugar mixture and stir well.
  5. Grease bundt pan and coat with remaining 3 tbsp sugar.
  6. Pour about a third of batter into pan then add approximately one third of chip mix to make layer.
  7. Repeat this step twice to make three layers of cake mix, and three layers of chocolate chips, ending with chocolate chips.
  8. Bake one hour and ten minutes.

This cake looks amazing – I don’t use my bundt pan often enough, and your cake makes me want to pull it out right away :)
